The famous Amalfi Coast and Capri
Amalfi Coast is one of the most internationally well-known coasts in Italy. It is known for its stunning coastal scenery, picturesque towns, and cultural heritage. We recommend you to travel just before high season, because of the heat and it’s extremely crowded, specially for small towns. Early June would be a perfect opportunity to swim without too much crowd.
How to get to the coast and move between towns
There are many ways to get to Amalfi, depending on the towns you want to visit. If you’re traveling from afar, you can fly into one of the nearby airports. The closest airports to the Amalfi Coast are Naples International Airport (NAP) and Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport (QSR). From there, you can continue by other means of transportation.
We arrived by car from Naples, directly to Amalfi town (one hour drive uphill) and we moved to other towns from there by ferry and motorcycle. Moving by car between towns can be challenging due to narrow, winding roads and also parking can be very difficult in the towns, so we recommend you, if you go by car, park the car at the hotel and move by bus or motorcycle.
More info about transportation:
By Motorcycle: We rented the motorbike here
By boat: Ferry services operate between various towns on the Amalfi Coast, including Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, and Salerno. It’s very cheap and you can enjoy the view of the coast as well, moving between towns. Remember to buy your ticket beforehand.
Private boat: If you want a private tour, we recommend you to rent a boat with Amalficruiseline. They set everything up, are very welcoming and take you wherever you want to go.
By bus: The SITA bus service operates along the Amalfi Coast, connecting the towns from Sorrento to Salerno. Buses are a convenient and affordable option, and they offer stunning views along the coastal route. On this page you’ll find the updated SITA bus schedule/timetable for all routes related to the Amalfi Coast towns (Ravello, Positano, Praiano, Amalfi etc.) and connections to Sorrento, Salerno, Naples
Best spots to visit along the Amalfi Coast:
1. Amalfi town
This town was our favorite. It’s a small beautiful town where you can visit the Duomo di Amalfi, stroll through the narrow streets, and relax at the beach, or visit the Cloister of Paradise. At night, the Duomo gets lighten and looks beautiful. Sometimes, you can find concerts in the Piazza del Duomo.
Food is amazing in town, you can find a variety of dining options, ranging from casual trattorias to upscale restaurants, with great views of the town or of the sea.
2. Ravello
This hilltop town offers breathtaking views of the coast and the surrounding mountains (10 minutes drive uphill from Amalfi). It’s a very small and familiar town. It’s known for its music festivals and cultural events, so if you are lucky you will see an event in the main square.
Don’t miss Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. two magnificent gardens with stunning sea views.
3. Positano
The colorful and postcard-perfect Positano. This town is beautiful to take pictures with the colorful cliffside houses and hotels in the background uphill. Here you can enjoy the beach, take a walk in the town or shop in fashionable boutiques. It’s one of the most touristic and expensive ones.
4. Praiano:
A quieter alternative to the more crowded towns. Praiano offers a tranquil atmosphere and beautiful views. Take a boat tour to the famous Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto) or relax on the scenic Marina di Praia beach.
5. Furore:
The ‘hidden gem’ on the Amalfi Coast. Visit the Fiordo di Furore, an enchanting cove surrounded by cliffs, and explore the village’s traditional architecture.
6. Capri:
Capri is not technically part of the Amalfi Coast but it’s often considered a popular destination for its glamorous atmosphere. It is easily accessible from the towns along the coast. To reach the island, you can take a ferry or hydrofoil from various ports along the Amalfi Coast, including Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi. The journey takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the departure point.
Some of the top attractions on the island include:
– Blue Grotto: iconic sea cave known for its mesmerizing blue hues
– Capri Town: filled with luxury shops, elegant boutiques, and upscale restaurants
– Anacapri: Located at a higher elevation than Capri Town, Anacapri offers beautiful views and a more relaxed atmosphere.
We recommend you to go uphill through the cable car located next to the port.
Where to stay
There are lots of options of accommodation. The prices vary a lot depending on the luxury level you are looking for.
We stayed at this beautiful and huge Airbnb at Pontone (the top of Amalfi town). They have many apartment options here, all with amazing views of the town and the sea. The owner helps you with everything you need. Since the streets are so narrow, in order to get to Amalfi from there, the easiest way is to rent a scooter in town (5 minutes ride). If not, you can walk 10 minutes to bus station (bus pass very often). Another option is to go by taxi but we don’t recommend it because they are very expensive.
Here are more options:
– Luxury Hotels: Hotel Santa Caterina, NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi, Hotel Luna Convento:
– Mid-Range Hotels: Hotel Residence Amalfi, Hotel Aurora, Hotel Miramalfi
– Budget Options: Hotel Floridiana, Hotel Antica Repubblica or Residence Casamalfi
Where to eat
Here is the list of our favorite places to eat in the coast. When visiting towns, it’s advisable to make reservations in advance, especially during the high season. The town’s culinary scene offers a delightful blend of traditional flavors and innovative gastronomy, allowing you to savor the rich culinary heritage of the Amalfi Coast.
Amalfi Town:
– Da Gemma: This was our favorite of all the coast. A family-run restaurant known for its warm hospitality and traditional Amalfi cuisine. Located in a narrow street, with The Duomo in front.
– Lido Azzurro: The seafood is incredible, and you can enjoy local specialties while taking in the beautiful seaside view.
– Locanda del marinaio: With a very unique style and traditional dishes with a modern taste.
Capri
– Da Paolino Lemon Trees: Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on seafood and traditional Caprese dishes, located in a charming lemon grove
– Aurora: authentic Caprese and Italian cuisine since 1912
