Favorite places to visit in Tuscany
Tuscany is an amazing region in Italy well known by its beautiful landscapes, including rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, and cypress-lined avenues. The Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Chianti wine region are particularly famous for their scenic beauty. We recommend you to go in winter or out of high season like summer because of the heat. We’ve being in both time of the year and we highly prefer December than July.
Here are some of our favorite places to visit in the region:
1. Florence:
This was our first trip as a couple, more than 10 years ago and our first photos together in this incredible city. If you want to start a trip to Tuscany, we recommend you to visit first the highlights of this city. Explore its iconic attractions like the Duomo, Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio, especially this last one by night with all the lights.
2. Val d’Orcia:
This area has breathtaking landscapes with rolling hills, vineyards, cypress trees, and beautiful villages. We drove through this town and was incredible. You can visit here towns like Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano.
3. Chianti:
This region is famous for its vineyards and picturesque countryside. The best activities here are wine tastings and visiting medieval villages like Greve and Castellina.
4. San Gimignano
Is a small medieval town located in the province of Siena, Tuscany. Known for its famous medieval towers and well-preserved historic center. We recommend you go very early to avoid crowds, explore the narrow streets, and the Museums, Climb the Towers, and visit Historic Center.
5. Cortona
The town is well known internationally because of the book/movie ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’. It’s a very unique and charming located in the province of Arezzo. It’s located on a hilltop, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The main square is very cute and you can enjoy the Christmas market with live music in December. It’s a very small town so it’s better if you park at the beginning of the town.
Our favorite Wine tastings
If you go to Tuscany, we recommend you at least one day for wine tasting. Usually, the places that offer this, are huge and it’s nice to stay all day around. In some of them, there is accommodation to stay the night. Our favorites are:
1. Agriturismo Cologne:
This is a very family-owned vineyard with an incredible experience we highly recommend. They do the tasting and vineyard tours, and they have accommodation for you to stay short on the long term in the facilities. We loved the attention of the people here and especially, we loved the restaurant. The restaurant has become a benchmark of quality not only for guests of Colognole but for fine-cuisine people in the region.
2. Il Borro:
This place is huge and very modern. They offer a lot of wine experiences and tours through the wine, the vineyards, and the cellar. They also offer more activities such as cooking classes, workshops, horseback riding, biking, and a whole variety of excursions in the countryside. Definitely, a fancy way to experience Tuscany.
Where to sleep?
We recommend you stay at the wine-tasting places at least for the experience. We also stayed at a huge Tuscany house outside of San Gimignano town, where you can experience the fresh flavors and scenarios of the real Tuscany.
We recommend you also if you prefer to travel to Tuscany by campervan, is very ideal to see the landscape and move between towns and regions. We had an amazing time getting to know small towns and sleeping in the middle of Tuscany. You can find all the parking spaces for sleep in this app.
Another perfect place to stay is Agriturismo Baccoleno. Famous for the curved driveway lined with cypress. If you want to go only to take a picture, you can go to the left of the entrance.
Where to eat?
In Tuscany, almost every place to eat is amazing. Here is a short list of our favorites:
- Restaurant of Agriturismo Colognole
- Osteria del Teatro in Cortona
- Osteria la porta in Monticchiello
Tuscany is known for its remarkable beauty. Driving around different areas of the region is breathtaking and one of the most recommended things to do when you visit Italy.
