Best time to visit

You can enjoy its great climate all year long, with mild winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the temperatures are better and the island is less crowded. Here is our guide to visit the highlights of these islands in one week.

How to get there and move through the islands

If you go directly to Fuerteventura, you can rent a car at the airport. This is the best way to move in the islands because public transportation is not as accessible as it is in other cities.

If you want to move from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote, a ferry is the best option and you can go with the rental car. This is the company where we bought our tickets in advance. It’s very important that when you buy the tickets, select the option that says you are not a resident of the Canary Islands because if you don’t, at the pier you’ll have to pay twice the price.

Another amazing experience is to rent a campervan and enjoy the island freely, sleeping in incredible landscapes with stunning beaches.

For one week, we recommend this route:

Day 1 to 3 – North of Fuerteventura

1. Corralejo Dunes:

This is a great spot to start your journey. You can find this amazing and natural attraction on Corralejo Natural park, located in the northern part of Fuerteventura. If you want to see a breathtaking landscape ob the island, this is the place. Between the dunes, you’ll find a few beaches with crystal-clear waters. The two most popular are Playa del Moro and Grandes Playas.

2. Cotillo Beach:

Cotillo Beach is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura with white sands and calm waters. It’s near El Cotillo town and it’s perfect for relaxing and sunbathing.

3. Lobos Island:

This natural reserve is a must if you are in the north of Fuerteventura. You can go for the day on a ferry because it’s located between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. This island is worth the visit because it feels like you are at the beach on Mars, because of its volcanic rocks. There are a few roads to follow if you want to walk the island. Our favorite was the path to ‘La Playita’, with a small pier and an amazing restaurant (we recommend you book this in advance because they have a few tables). Views from here are one of a kind.

Day 3 to 4 – Lanzarote

4. Timanfaya National Park:

This is a great spot to start your journey. You can find this amazing natural attraction on Corralejo Natural Park, located in the northern part of Fuerteventura. If you want to see a breathtaking landscape on the island, this is the place. Between the dunes, you’ll find a few beaches with crystal-clear waters. The two most popular are Playa del Moro and Grandes Playas.

5. El Charco de los Clicos

Also known as the Green Lagoon or Lago Verde, is a stunning natural attraction located near the village of El Golfo, on the southwest coast of the island. To get to El Charco de los Clicos, you can walk from El Golfo or go by car. We went by car after the Timanfaya National Park, straight to the viewpoint. Here you’ll see the breathtaking sight of the green lagoon set against the black volcanic sands and the deep blue ocean.

7. Vineyards:

In the south of the island, you can find a different type of vineyard, formed in black volcanic rocks. This landscape is definitely one of a kind.

Day 5 to 7 – South of Fuerteventura

8. Sotavento de Jandía:

Located on the southern tip of Fuerteventura, along the Jandía Peninsula. The landscape of this area is incredible and a must if you want to see sand dunes with beaches in the same place. We recommend you to go to ‘Playa de sotavento’. It’s the perfect beach to windsurf and kitesurf since it is very windy some months of the year.

9. Cofete Beach:

This is definitely the highlight of Fuerteventura. Is a 14km beach in the wild. To get here, you’ll have to drive one hour from Morro Jable town, located on the south of the island. It’s very important you’ll drive by day because it’s not an easy way to get there. On the way, you can stop at the viewpoint, where you’ll see Cofete Beach from a high point with a breathtaking view. When you get there, you’ll find a very long and virgin landscape. We slept there one night and the experience was incredible.

Where to sleep?

We went by campervan and we used this app to find the best spots to sleep in the beautiful islands. At Lanzarote, we stayed in an incredible boutique hotel called Palacio ICO, located in Teguise town. An exclusive Boutique Hotel designed to make you feel unique and special with 9 rooms. It was a typical Canary house built in 1690 and beautifully restored. We loved this place and we cannot wait to go back.

Where to eat?

Our list of favorite places to eat:

  • La Marquesina – Corralejo (Fuerteventura)
  • Ikarus – Teguise (Lanzarote)
  • Palacio Ivo – Teguise (Lanzarote)

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are both unique and special islands. These two were our first time in the archipelago and we couldn’t be happier. The people are incredibly nice and the landscapes are breathtaking. Definitely worth the visit.
