The magic of Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is one of the most iconic wildlife conservation areas in the world. If you are looking to experience the best safaris, this is definitely the place.

What we loved about this park was the opportunities we had to witness these animals in their natural habitats and observe their behaviors up close. There are so many routes you can take, that you can be very close to animals.

How to get to Serengeti National Park

Getting to Serengeti National Park in Tanzania usually involves a combination of flights and ground transportation. Most visitors arrive in Tanzania at either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam.

Depending on your safari itinerary, you’ll need to take domestic flights to Seronera Airstrip, the main airport in the Serengeti. Afterward, ground transportation will be required to reach your lodge or camp. In our case, we traveled by car from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to the Serengeti because we visited other national parks in the week leading up to our safari.

Admission Tickets

By visiting the Serengeti, you contribute to the park’s conservation efforts. Park fees are required, and they vary depending on the type of entry permit you need. If your lodge is inside the park, special fees apply. Additionally, for specific events like the Great Migration, special entry permits or packages may be available for the duration of the event. Always consult your safari company for more information on permits. You can find the park fees for 2024 here.

5 reasons why you should visit this park at least once in a lifetime:

1. Amazing Wildlife:

The variety of wildlife here is incredible. Cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and countless other species can be found. If you are looking to see the famous “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros), you can find them here, although buffalos and rhinos can be challenging to spot. In our safari, we combined the Serengeti with Ngorongoro National Park, where we saw the last two species.

You can find a lot of different scenarios inside the park. You can see the ‘pride rocks’ (the famous Lions Kind rocks) where the lions rest in shadow, rivers with hipos and so much more.

2. Breathtaking landscape:

The park’s landscapes are breathtaking, covering one of the largest national park areas in Africa (14,750 square kilometers). Diverse ecosystems, including expansive grasslands, wooded areas, riverine forests, and rocky outcrops, make the Serengeti a captivating destination.

3. Unforgettable safaris:

You will have an amazing safari experience in this place. Depending on the route and the experience of your tour guide, you’ll encounter incredible views and animals. Guides are in constant communication with each other to provide you with the best possible wildlife and nature experience.

4. Luxury lodging:

If you are looking to experience a luxury camp, you can stay in one of the camps inside the Serengeti. For us, it was an amazing experience to sleep in this camp and have breakfast with a view

We stayed at Kon Tiki Camp in a family tent. The tents are spacious and have bathrooms inside. The team was very welcoming, and they organize a bonfire every night. This was one of the highlights of our trip.

5. Contact with nature:

The beauty and size of Serengeti’s plains offers moments of relaxation and a chance to connect with nature on a deeper level. The immensity of the landscape and the absence of urban distractions make it an ideal for this.

What people ask the most:

1. If we were scared to be close to animals:

We never felt insecure on our trip; in fact, we felt very safe. By following your safari tour’s instructions, you can experience the best safari without any problems. The camps inside the park are well-located and have many security measures.

2. Why guides are not armed?

In Tanzania, it is not allowed to be armed inside the parks, and interaction with wild animals is prohibited. The rules are strict to preserve wildlife and ensure everyone’s safety. Animals are used to safari cars, so they may pass quite close to the trucks to continue on their way or take a nap where they feel comfortable.

In other countries, safaris may allow feeding animals to bring them closer. However, such behavior can disrupt the natural food chain and be dangerous. In Tanzania, interactions with animals are not allowed to maintain their natural habitat.

3. Is it a good plan for a honeymoon?

This is a very romantic place to be. If you want to be in contact with nature and see incredible wildlife, this is definitely the place. There are many tent camps and hotels with stunning experiences and views, making it an amazing plan for a honeymoon. We did a private safari for a week and then went to Zanzibar island to relax on beautiful paradise beaches.

4. Did you see the great migration?

Unfortunately, we didn’t because we went during another season. The best time to witness the great migration is around November when the animals move to Northern Serengeti and cross the Mara River. As the dry season progresses, the herds move northward toward the Mara River, forming the border between Tanzania and Kenya. Crossing the Mara River is a highlight of the migration and can be amazing to watch.

If you want to see the great migration, we recommend checking with local guides and tour operators because the exact timing of these movements can vary due to factors such as weather and food availability.

The Serengeti National Park was our favorite in Tanzania. Witnessing so much wildlife made the visit worthwhile. We were happily overwhelmed to experience this magical place.
